Clayden Holsteins

Dairy Cattle

Clayhanger Hall Farm is a working Dairy Farm of 300 acres owned by the Hughes family of Dennis, Rachel and their children.

The farm is mainly grass with some wheat grown to make wholecrop feed for the cows in the winter. Fields of grass are cut during the summer to make silage to feed the cows during the wet winter months; as the clay land makes it impossible to graze the dairy herd out in the fields.

200 Milking Dairy Cows provide 7,500 litres of creamy fresh milk for Robert Wiseman Dairies each day. The milk is quality tested and the farm is ‘Farm Assured’. The quality milk is taken by tanker to Manchester where it is pasteurised and put into containers to provide fresh milk for Sainsbury's supermarkets across the North West.

The Dairy Herd is pedigree Holstein with all cows originating from named bloodlines. The farm rears all the heifer calves and they come into the herd as replacements when they have have calves of their own.

The farming day starts at 4.30 am and finishes at 7.00 pm each evening.

Dennis, Lance and Joe milk the cows twice a day, each morning and evening and spend the rest of the day feeding and watering the cows and preparing their softly mattressed cubicles for a comfortable nights sleep. The cows are fed on a mixture of silage and corn mixed with molasses, sugarbeet, Soya beans, maize and minerals to make a nourishing and balanced diet. They have access to fresh water at all times as cows will drink about 20 gallons of water a day each.
